New Zion Baptist Church 1905 Mound St. Beloit, WI 608-362-7703 Website: newzionbeloit.com
The New Zion Baptist Church began after the migration of Blacks from the south to Beloit, Wisconsin. April 8, 1917, was noted as the official beginning of New Zion Baptist Church. The New Zion congregation held outdoor meetings to worship. Sunday afternoon services were held on the Fairbanks Morse hillside near Pleasant and Lawton Streets. Later, they held services in homes, and over a garage overlooking the east bank of Rock River, south of St. Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Shed Barksdale accepted the first pastoral position for the congregation and faithfully served until 1925. In December 1925, Rev. George W. Bowen was called to pastor New Zion. It was during Rev. Bowen\'s two-year term as pastor that New Zion purchased the property on the corner of Merrill and Third Streets. At this time the first structure for the church was purchased from Branigan\'s Coal and Ice Company. The "Old Ice House" was moved onto the vacant lot at 110 Merrill Avenue. In 1927, Rev. Bowen decided to return to the south, and Rev. Burgess of Bethel Baptist Church served as interim pastor for two years. Rev. Burgess. Rev. Ogiss Dillon, a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, became the pastor in December 1929. During the 28 years that Rev. Dillon served as pastor of New Zion, many changes were made in the structure that still exists today. The loan on the property was paid in full in 1945, and with the congregation of New Zion growing the "Old Ice House" was no longer adequate as our church edifice. In 1949, a building fund was raised and a new edifice was started. In November 1953, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Wisconsin laid the cornerstone and in May 1954, the building was dedicated. After the death of Rev. Dillon on January 25, 1957 Rev. D. W. Johnson served as interim pastor. Rev. U. S. Pride was chosen to become the fourth pastor of New Zion Baptist Church. In July 1957, Rev. Pride came to Beloit, Wisconsin, to lead the congregation of New Zion Baptist Church. In July 1957, Rev. Pride came to Beloit, Wisconsin, to lead the congregation of New Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Pride brought faith, hope and a fellowship of love with him to New Zion. During Rev. Pride\'s term as pastor; property was purchased on Third Street for a parsonage. Continuing to grow, in 1962 the mortgage on the church building was burned and a building fund was started for a much needed educational unit. In 1967 the three-floor educational building was completed. New Zion had a strong growth in membership over the next few years, so there was a need for a larger church. So, Under Rev. Pride’s encouragement and the efforts of the church deacons and trustees, the Waterman School site on 1905 Mound Avenue was purchased from the City of Beloit in April 1984. After 33 years of service, Rev. Pride announced his retirement, to be effective July 1987, but agreed to continue to serve in a pastoral capacity until the position was filled. Thus, Rev. Pride served until January 1990. At that time, Rev. Pride was named Pastor Emeritus and Rev. Siddell served as interim pastor for the next two years. On the church’s 75th year, demolition of the Waterman School began in preparation for a new church edifice. In 1992, after a two-year search for a pastor, Rev. Henry A. Gladney of Okolona, Mississippi, was elected as the next pastor of New Zion Baptist Church. With so many members of New Zion working very hard for many years preparing for the new church building and Rev. U.S. Pride serving as the key person to move the congregation toward the new edifice, it was under the leadership of Pastor Gladney that the dream of the congregation finally became a reality. Under the leadership of Pastor Gladney, the deacons, and trustees groundbreaking for the new edifice was held on July 14, 1993, and construction on the Waterman School site was begun. After much prayer and faith, the building was completed on April 1, 1994. Members and friends of New Zion marched from the old location on Merrill to the new church building on April 10, 1994. In October of 2003, Reverend Gladney and New Zion severed its union. Subsequently, Elder Marshall Kent was elected as the interim pastor and continued to serve the church faithfully until the Lord would give to the New Zion congregation a new pastor. In November of 2004, Reverend James M. Ivy, of Decatur, Georgia was chosen to be that leader and on Sunday, February 20, 2005, Reverend Ivy was installed as the 6th pastor of New Zion Baptist Church. As a result of New Zion’s revived resolve and under leadership of Pastor James M. Ivy, new members were exponentially added to the congregation; new ministries were added providing the church with over forty ministries for its members to be active in the work of the church. In 2006, at the close of the year, the New Zion Church, in response to the pastor’s vision, paid off and ceremonially burned its mortgage thereby freeing the church to financially support more Christ centered ministry. With its leader and clear and practical vision in place, the congregation of New Zion Baptist Church, has vowed to remain devoted to the principles and commands of God; follow and depend solely upon the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit; and with genuine love, continue to obey the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to “proclaim the Gospel and make disciples of every creature” until His glorious return”.

Pastor’s 14th Year Anniversary.
Recognizing our New Zion Baptist Church, Chapel Nurses. Thank You for all you do. ( May is Nurses Appreciation Month)
Sermon Paraphrased: For Our Pastor’s Anniversary Guest Pastor- Pastor Christopher R. Boston of Milwaukee, WI Lamb of God Baptist Church For the real deal, join us on Sundays @ 10AM 1905 Mound Ave Life sometimes has us wondering if God even cares. Habakkuk grows discouraged and further in despair. He looks to God and wonders what he is doing and is looking for the moment when He will intervene. Habakkuk does not want to talk to the people. He complains to God. In life, you have to be careful when you ask God a question. You have to brace yourself for the answer. Habakkuk questions God and the solution is that He will send the Babylonians to deal with the people. Habakkuk said wait, wait, wait now the solution is worse than the problem. Have YOU ever had a problem and the solution was worse than the problem?? Habakkuk is burdened that God seems unconcerned about the plight of the people and burdened by the answer God gave. Have you ever gotten an answer from God that you weren’t looking for?! But no need to worry. God always has a plan. Sometimes God doesn’t give you the answer you want, but He gives you the response you need! God told Habakkuk in Chapter 2 that, even though the wicked continue to prosper, the just shall live by faith! By Chapter 3, God has reminded Habakkuk of who He is. We tend to remember the things we should forget and forget the things we should remember! In Chapter 3, Habakkuk gives his praise and remembers how good God is! Yet... things may happen. Yet... there may be struggle. Yet... when your friends leave you high and dry. Yet... everything seems to have left you. Habakkuk has righteous resolve and says... YET...I WILL rejoice in the Lord! He gives us a sure footing. Able to climb mountains like a deer. He’ll make my feet like deers’ feet... He won’t let my feet slip and keep my feet steady on every level! Stand on His promises!!

Sermon Paraphrased: For the real deal, join us Sundays at 10am 1905 Mound Ave One of the magnificent things about the Bible is it gives us both negatives and positives about the many people featured in its narratives. The good. The bad. And the ugly about our Biblical heroes. The Bible does not hide that David, the Shepard King of Israel, was an adulterer and that he killed a man. The Bible does not edit out the mistakes of the Apostle Peter, who will cuss you out and cut you if the opportunity arose. Both sides of the coin. In Genesis chapter 21, it describes an ugly happening in the lives of Abraham and Sarah. There was a feast because God kept his promise and gave them a son. Please read the story beginning in Genesis chapter 12. Though Abraham heard the promise, all he could focus on was the problem. He’s old and his wife was old. How would they have a baby to be his heir? The promises of God only causes us problems if we do not believe that he will do all that He said He would do! Lean not on your own understanding. From their human point of view, having a baby was a problem. Sarah thought that she was a problem solver. She gave Hagar unto Abraham as his wife. Sarah tried to step ahead of God. Thought it was a good idea to have her maid sleep with Abraham. See Hagar’s story in Genesis Chapter 12. Hagar used was to get ahead of God as Sarah was trying to solve their own problems. Abraham laid with Hagar and she bore Ismael. They thought they were “helping God out”. Sarah thought she had solved the problem...but she had only made matters worse. It was the making of a dysfunctional family. In Chapter 21, God kept his promise and Sarah (age 90) bore Isaac. Because they took matters in their own hands, now her own son was on the scene and Sarah wanted to do something about this young maid Hagar, hanging around the house. They through a party for Isaac... there was a problem at the party. A situation at the celebration. Ismael had been teasing and taunting Isaac. Sarah looked over and saw Ismael making fun of Isaac. Filled with anger, Sarah insisted to Abraham get rid of Hagar and Ismael. Sarah didn’t want the inheritance to be threatened for HER son. So, they were thrown out. We should be moved to think about the women who are just like Hagar in this story. Worry about the struggles of the women in our modern society. The struggle of being a single mother. Hagar was forced to provide and raise her teenage child. When speaking about single mothers, we should look at the Mothers that want help but none is provided. You can be married and STILL be a single mother. The struggle of raising the children single-handedly. The things we learn from Hagar: 1) the struggle of lost relationship Abraham rose early and gave food and drink to Hagar and sent her and Ismael away. She was fired from her job as a maid and sent away. She could not be in the home without all it’s comforts and help. She was rejected and torn away from everything familiar. She probably felt used and betrayed. She may have expected it from Sarah, but Abraham was a different story. For 13 years, it had been Abraham and Ismael. But since Isaac was on the seen, they were thrown in the streets. How could he put his own son on the street?! She had no family. This was a severe situation. A union had been broken. There was nothing to ease her aching heart. She is struggling with the loss of relationship. 2) Struggle of limited resources The separation left her homeless and broke. She was only provided bread and water. She had no resource and they were down to nothing. Have you ever reached your low? And all you have left is to lift your head and cry! That’s what Hagar did in Beersheba. Abraham could’ve given them more. Ever since Chapter 13, he had it going on! But Hagar saw none of it! No child support, no silver, no livestock, no gold. He should’ve at least provided for his FIRST born son. Bread? Water? Were they supposed to live off of those resources? A lot of Mother’s struggle because of limited resources. One day Hagar had it all and the next she had nothing. The wilderness of Beersheba was no place for a single woman and her son. This was a place for thieves and robbers and bandits. Do you feel sorry for her? Don’t you want to reach out and help her? It doesn’t matter how she became a single mother. Many single mothers are struggling alone and they need help and encouragement... just like Hagar. The church is supposed to care for single mothers. She may not be at the church. She may not put in a prayer request. But we should be praying for her. Through our acts, God can use us as His hands and feet to help single mothers of the world. These are the people the church should be willing to help and give aid to her. She is trying her best and trying to be both mother and father. She may doing well with some of it but she cannot do a job that she was not designed to do and that’s being a father. Let’s direct our attention back to Hagar. In the desert, she began to cry because Ismael was frail, lips cracked, and on his way to death. Hagar placed him under a tree and wailed. BUT she received the Lords relief. God gave her hope and help!! He heard her and Ismael call out! An angel came to her and said help was on the way! Hold on for just a while longer. The hope was from a divine promise. And the help came from a divine provision. God told Hagar of His plan for Ismael. If you want the Lord’s relief.... you’ve got to PARTICIPATE in the promises of God. Verse 18, God told her to rise! Stop talking negatively about the child’s father. Stop saying that you won’t make it. God will supply all your needs according to His riches in Glory!

“When Private Choices Become Public Consequences” Sermon Paraphrased... for the real deal, join us at 10am on Sunday mornings: Sinatra sang that two things go together.. Love and Marriage. We know that two more things go together... Choices and Consequences. We are good at making choices but not too good at facing the consequences. A woman was caught in the act of adultery. The text says that this was an inappropriate relationship. The text does not tell us who was the one who started the relationship. We don’t know who was the one who was married. All we know is that the woman was on trial. Biblical law mandated that, if caught in the act of adultery, guilty parties would be stoned. Trying to prevent this behavior from happening. The leaders of the Synagogue dragged the woman out to see Jesus. This is a sad case because this was a public situation. When folk find out you’ve been making bad choices, they have to run and tell their friends and now it’s at the mercy of the public opinion. The thing that’s intriguing is that the thing that was done in a duo... was placed on trial as a solo. The sista was standing on trial by herself. We have no clue why she’s the only one on trial and why she had gotten into this mess. Maybe she was scared and couldn’t say no. Maybe she needed some security or was lonely. Maybe she figured she was grown and could do what she wanted... whatever it is, she surely got more than what she was asking for. What happens a lot of times is not what we thought was going to happen. Her private choice was facing public consequences and even if she’s acquitted of the crime, everyone still knows what happened or could have happened. Her business is in the street and her shame is public. Let’s learn from her story to tell us how to handle things that hurt us from the outside, in. When you really look at the text and really try to understand her situation, you begin to feel sorry for her. She WAS wrong, no doubt, but she didn’t know that her Netflix and Chill was going to be public shame. Let’s put this with other situations: alcoholics didn’t think that one drink would lead to Cirrhosis of the liver; the person hitting the crack pipe once didn’t think they would be addicted, etc. How can we learn from this? 1) Brought her to Jesus She was actually brought to Him as a trap for Jesus. Using her pain to get to him so that he’d make a bad choice in judging her. That’s what people do... to cover their own sin and insecurities. Those who go around to trap others try to draw attention away from their own mistakes. Jesus saw her pain and shame and knew they were trying to use her. If you’re tired of people bringing up your past and mess and exploiting you, bring your “stuff” to Jesus! Don’t let nobody else bring your stuff to him! He’ll deal with your “stuff”, and those people bringing out your “stuff”, in the right way. 2) Wait for Jesus to speak Jesus told the accusers that if they be without sin to go ahead and cast the first stone. He then went back to writing in the dirt. He asked where the accusers were and the woman looked around and realized she was there alone. 3) Deal with your sin from within Oftentimes the problem we have is we may have brought our “stuff” to Jesus and he forgave us. But we have not forgiven ourselves. Come to Jesus and see God’s love for us. We need to confess our sins and let go of our baggage and he will set us free. Don’t be the one casting stones at yourself. You don’t have to live in shame or fear. Yes, you’ve done wrong and made mistakes but we should be glad to know that the Lord has forgiven us and he wants you to be free. Go and sin no more! He freed you on the inside so drop your rocks!
